Graphics software

In computer graphics, graphics software or image editing software is a program or collection of programs that enable a person to manipulate visual images on a computer. These are the application software which lets the user to create and manipulate any type of computer graphics with the use of an operating system.

Computer graphics can be classified into two distinct categories: raster graphics and vector graphics. Many graphics programs focus exclusively on either vector or raster graphics, but there are a few that combine them in interesting ways. It is simple to convert from vector graphics to raster graphics, but going the other way is harder. Some software attempts to do this.

In addition to static graphics, there are animation and video editing software. The exact sources of graphics such as video, images and drawings may vary for different tasks, but most can read and write files.

Most graphics programs have the ability to import and export one or more graphics file formats, including those formats written for a particular computer graphics program. Examples of such programs include GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, Pizap, Microsoft Publisher, Picasa, etc.

Microsoft Photo Editor

Microsoft Photo Editor is an image-editing application found in Microsoft Office 97–XP versions for Windows, classified as one of Microsoft Office Tools. It has been replaced by Microsoft Office Picture Manager, although many Photo Editor features are not available in Picture Manager.

The program was a tool for doing raster graphics with editing tools to texturize, negative, adjust gamma, make GIF transparency and many others. It was based on HALO Desktop Imager by Media Cybernetics, L.P.

Issues

Metadata

Early versions of Microsoft Photo Editor, including the version bundled with Office 2000, erased metadata from digital camera JPEG images during saves. The Office 2000 version also, when saving BMP files, sets the resolution metadata to 0 by 0, regardless of what resolution (DPI) is set through the program UI.

Size Limit

Version 3.0.2.3 and earlier had a 10 MP (megapixel) image (resolution) size limit, but not image file size limit. Large Windows bitmap BMP files can be opened in Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0.2.3, as well as, e.g. a 4000 x 2578-pixel, 15-MB *.JPG image.
